Thanks for the apology, first of all! If we end up havin' a chat again, I'd really appreciate it if you could either send me a note with a link to your art or comment on the art itself--I've commented on a bunch of different arts today (I tend to just go through whatever pops up for 'newest' under 'hetalia Seychelles' and related tags) so I'm not really sure of which username corresponds to which art.
That said, it doesn't matter that Sey was whitewashed in canon until recently. The character is a representation of a real nation, an island chain off the coast of Africa, and while the people there are often lighter than mainland Africa bc of their lack of an indigenous population and the English & French influence due to colonization, they're still pretty dang dark! Coloring her too light just brings up all kinds of gross stuff regarding racist Western beauty standards (light skin is generally perceived as more beautiful/an indicator of purity) & whitewashed history in general. So it's ridic to whitewash her when (as I'm sure you do!) you really disagree with all that nastiness & don't want any of your actions to reflect it.
I know that sounds ridiculous since it's just one little fanart, but the problem is /everyone/ sees their art that way and then we just end up in this awful cyclical mess of putting off responsibility. Moral of the story: friends don't let friends whitewash. I know this ended up being pretty longwinded, but read it all the way through, ok? You came to
my page, after all.
